I use tarot and oracle cards as tools for reflection and contemplation. Rather than divining the future, they are a way for me to look more deeply at the "now."

Pincushion

From the Shadowlands Tarot, the Three of Swords; from the Brownie Wisdom deck, "Small deeds:"

If someone comes along and shoots an arrow into your heart, it’s fruitless to stand there and yell at the person. It would be much better to turn your attention to the fact that there’s an arrow in your heart...
― Pema Chödrön

We've all been a pincushion at times - the object of constant criticism or unkind barbs. No matter how cool we try to look on the outside, it still hurts. If we retaliate instead of taking care of our wounded heart, then all we've done is create two people in pain. When that victorious feeling of getting in a jab at another person fizzles, we're left to ruminate on our own hurt. The Brownie card encourages us to flip the script, to do some small, good deeds for others instead or perpetuating pain. Then we'll create two people filled with joy.

Hunt Instinct

From the Tarot of Pagan Cats, the Nine of Pentacles; from the Brownie Wisdom deck, Small Deeds:

The Nine of Pentacles is a card of accomplishment due to hard work and discipline. But what catches my eye in this card is the size of that falcon. Like the cat, it is a predator with an intense focus; once locked on to its target, it swiftly catches and dispatches its prey. But in this card it is hooded, meaning a time of rest from the hunt. Yet sometimes we have a hard time turning off our 'hunt' instinct. Research has shown that people have forgotten how to relax and enjoy their leisure time; others stress out about planning the perfect vacation. Rather than over-analyzing or scheduling, just putter around exploring what is fun. No time is ever wasted if it is fun. Even the Brownie seems to focus on those small things we can do, which often brings the greater rewards.
