I use tarot and oracle cards as tools for reflection and contemplation. Rather than divining the future, they are a way for me to look more deeply at the "now."

Heavy Lifting

From the Tarot of the Masters, the Ten of Wands; from the Key to the Kingdom, the Ten of Clubs:

It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it.
―Lou Holtz

Just like these women carrying heavy bundles of firewood in the winter, we all shoulder burdens. There are diverse types of loads, some that are hidden and others that are obvious. One of the tools that can help us carry our hardship is to notice others who are trudging along with their own. Compassion brings us together, giving us strength, and keeps us from feeling separate and alone. The Ace of Clubs is paired with a rhyme that describes a keyhole, without a key and a door without a handle or house. It ends with the line "say nothing, creep away, and live to knock another day!" When we find ourselves suddenly having to bear a hardship, we may get stuck in an undertow of "why." Yet even if we have an answer, would that actually satisfy us and make the load lighter? As Arthur Ashe flipped it, "If I don't ask "Why me?" after my victories, I cannot ask "Why me?" after my setbacks and disasters."
